U-M maintained its ranking as the top U.S. public university in the QS World University Rankings for 2019–20, and ranked 21st among all institutions on the list, down one spot from last year in the ranking released in June 2019. U-M is one of two U.S. public universities and 13 private U.S. universities making the top 30. (The other public U.S. university is the University of California, Berkeley at No. 28.)

The QS World University Rankings, launched in 2004, are based on six factors: academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-student ratio, citations per faculty, proportion of international faculty and proportion of international students.
